Since its establishment in 1964, the AfDB Internship has stood as the preeminent pan-African development institution, dedicated to advancing economic prosperity and social well-being throughout the continent. With 81 member states, including 54 in Africa (Regional Member Countries), the Bank is committed to a development agenda that fosters financial and technical support for transformative projects, ultimately leading to significant reductions in poverty through inclusive and sustainable economic growth. To achieve the precise goals of the Ten-Year Strategy (2023 – 2032) and amplify its developmental impact, the Bank has prioritized five key areas for expansion, namely: energy, agro-business, industrialization, integration, and enhancing the quality of life for the people of Africa.

The Internship program is an integral part of a broader Talent Management Framework, strategically designed to facilitate the Bank’s progress towards realizing the Ten-Year Strategy and the High 5s.

AfDB Internship serves two primary objectives:

  1. Offering students a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience within the African Development Bank.
  2. Providing the Bank with a talent pool of potential candidates for future recruitment endeavors.

However, it’s important to note that applicants should not anticipate the internship leading to immediate employment at the Bank.

AfDB Internship Qualification Requirements

In order to qualify for an internship, candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

  1. They must have reached the legal age of adulthood in their country of origin and should not exceed the age of thirty (30) when they commence the internship program.
  2. Currently, they should be enrolled in a master’s level degree program at a recognized educational institution, whether public or private.
  3. Candidates may apply for an internship within one (1) year of obtaining their master’s degree.
  4. They should hold citizenship in one of the Member Countries of the African Development Bank.
  5. A confirmation letter from their educational institution, verifying their enrollment, or a copy of their degree, should be provided. Additionally, applicants must be proficient in at least one of the Bank’s two official languages (English or French).
  6. Proficiency in the Bank’s standard software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) is required, and familiarity with SAP is considered an asset.
