About European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR)

The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme delivered by a consortium of partner institutions in Europe, Africa and Asia. The programme is coordinated by the University of Oldenburg in Germany and funded by the European Union.

EMMIR brings together students and partner institutions from different regions to examine migration and intercultural relations through interdisciplinary teaching, research and practical experience.

About The EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme

EMMIR Edition 14 covers the 2027–2029 academic period. The programme carries 120 ECTS credits and is delivered entirely in person. It does not offer a fully online study option.

Programme Structure

  1. Orientation and intensive phase: The programme starts in Oldenburg on 1 September 2027 with an orientation and intensive phase.
  2. First semester: Students study together at the University of Oldenburg from October to December 2027.
  3. Second semester: Students continue at the University of Stavanger in Norway from January 2028 to May or June 2028.
  4. Third semester: Students follow an individual mobility path, complete a project-based internship and take a focus module at an EMMIR partner institution in Europe, Africa or Asia. The internship is scheduled for June or July 2028 to November 2028.
  5. Fourth semester: The semester begins with a proposal colloquium at the University of Oldenburg. Students then conduct research and write their master’s thesis under the supervision of one or more partner universities.

The master’s thesis is due on 30 June 2029, with graduation scheduled for September 2029.

Funding And Study Place Categories

Applicants are considered under one of three funding or participation categories:

  1. Erasmus+ Scholarship Holder
  2. Non-Fee-Paying Self-Funded Student
  3. Fee-Paying Self-Funded Student

Erasmus+ Scholarship Holder

  • Receives €1,400 per month for 24 months.
  • Health insurance, university registration and student-service fees are covered.
  • Must pay mobility-related expenses, including travel, visas, vaccinations and residence-permit fees, from the monthly scholarship.
  • Does not receive separate travel or installation payments.

Non-Fee-Paying Self-Funded Student

  • Does not pay programme participation costs.
  • Receives coverage for health insurance, university registration and student-service fees.
  • Must finance living expenses and mobility-related costs independently.
  • Must demonstrate sufficient financial means for visa purposes.

Fee-Paying Self-Funded Student

  • Pays participation costs of €4,500 per semester.
  • Must finance accommodation, living expenses and required mobility costs.
  • Health insurance, university registration and student-service fees are included in the participation costs.
  • Applications remain open until all available places are assigned or 15 July 2027, whichever comes first.

Participation costs for fee-paying students cover obligatory programme activities, health insurance, host-university registration and student-service fees. They do not cover accommodation, living expenses or travel.

Eligibility And Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a relevant first degree, such as a degree in social sciences, history, cultural studies, educational sciences, law, economics, development studies or journalism.
  • Applicants seeking consideration for an Erasmus+ scholarship must have completed the relevant first degree by the scholarship application deadline.
  • The minimum final first-degree grade is C+ or an equivalent qualification, supported by official documentation.
  • Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations and empirical methods through relevant modules, papers, essays or examination results.
  • Relevant professional or research experience is considered an advantage.
  • The most recent degree should normally have been obtained within the previous five years.
  • Applicants with an older degree must explain their decision to return to university in their statement of purpose.
  • Applicants who already hold a master’s degree must justify why they wish to pursue another master’s degree.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate education was not conducted in English, must demonstrate English proficiency by the application deadline.
  • Applicants whose native language is English must demonstrate proficiency in a second language relevant to migration studies at the required level.
  • Applicants must provide all required documentation. Failure to do so results in exclusion from further assessment.
  • Applicants who have previously benefited from an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship are not eligible for another Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
  • Applicants must be prepared for compulsory mobility and study or living periods in Germany, Norway and other partner locations according to their selected mobility path.

Selection And Admission

Selection is based on academic qualifications, research or professional experience, motivation, and second- or third-language proficiency. The final admission decision is made by a Selection Board consisting of representatives of the partner institutions.

The Selection Board is scheduled to decide admissions and the reserve list at the end of March 2027. Admission notifications for successful scholarship, non-fee-paying and fee-paying applicants who meet the relevant early deadline are scheduled to begin in April 2027.

Applicants who are admitted must send certified true hard copies of their application documents for verification before receiving final admission. Successful applicants have 10 calendar days after receiving their notification to send the certified documents and proof of dispatch.
