Prize Description

The FuturArc Prize 2024 invites participants to propose architectural solutions for the sustenance of life following one or both of the subsequent scenarios:

  1. Climate Catastrophe: This encompasses significant or extreme climate-induced disasters caused by hydrometeorological factors (such as floods, storms, and heatwaves) or climatological factors (such as droughts and wildfires). Consider the recent record-breaking heatwaves worldwide, where scientists suggest that the Earth is experiencing its hottest climate in at least 120,000 years. Large-scale climate disasters have already adversely affected vulnerable populations. How can architecture address this impending reality?
  2. Endings: This pertains to the termination of lifespans, whether for humans, non-human species, or ecosystems like forests, coral reefs, and drylands, due to factors like famine, disease, extensive resource extraction, and more. All living entities eventually cease to exist. Current practices for handling deceased matter tend to be carbon-intensive or necessitate large tracts of land, a limited resource. At the urban level, facilities such as cemeteries and crematoriums are often viewed negatively. Is there a way to manage the end of life, whether for humans or ecosystems, in a manner that instills hope and regeneration for the future?”

Task Proposals should incorporate the following elements: WHERE: Select a location within Asia, with a maximum site area of 5 hectares (equal to 50,000 square meters). This site can either be your current place of residence or any place that you are well-acquainted with. • WHICH: Choose one or both of the scenarios (Climate Destruction or Endings) to address based on the selected site:

  • If addressing Climate Destruction, clearly define and elaborate on the specific climate disaster that would impact the selected site’s context. Is it intense heat, extreme drought, or inundation by seawater?
  • If focusing on Endings, specify the context of endings. Is it the end of human lifespans, those of non-human species, or the lifecycles of ecosystems? Depending on your choice, elucidate how these scenarios affect the site’s context in terms of physical and spatial conditions, community and population conditions, socioeconomic factors, and ecological and natural conditions. WHAT: Describe the proposed sustainable architectural solution. These solutions can either be entirely new constructions or adaptations of existing buildings and can span various typologies. • HOW: Explain the implementation and execution of the solution.

This competition is open on a global scale and welcomes participation from individuals or teams, whether they are students or professionals.

  • A team can consist of up to five members with diverse backgrounds and expertise. The team may include a mix of students and professionals.
  • Once a team submits their entries, they are not allowed to exchange or remove any team member. Each team member may only participate in one team.
  • One team member must be designated as the leader and should be clearly identified as such on the registration form. This leader will be the sole point of contact for all interactions with the competition registrar. The team leader is required to have a background in architecture, meaning they are either a student of architecture, a graduate in architecture, or a practicing architect.
  • All team members are recognized as co-authors of the project they collectively submit, and they will be acknowledged as such in all communications, exhibitions, and publications associated with the competition.
  • Individual entrants are considered the sole authors of the projects they submit and will be acknowledged as such in all communications, displays, exhibitions, and publications related to the competition.
  • Each individual entrant will act as their own representative in all interactions with the competition registrar.

Evaluation Criteria

The judging process will be based on a comprehensive explanation of the following elements aligned with the competition’s task:

Relevance: The selected scenario(s) (climate disaster and/or ending of lifespans) and the proposed solution should be directly pertinent to the site’s conditions and context. This alignment must fulfill the design and functional requirements detailed in the brief, supported by thorough analysis.

Integration: The design should demonstrate the integration of various natural and human-made systems, which may encompass climate responsiveness, resilience, socioeconomic considerations, and more.

Impact: Evaluation will consider how the proposed solution impacts both the community and the environment. This assessment encompasses resource optimization, enhancements to health and well-being, biodiversity, and other relevant factors.

Innovation: The originality of the solutions proposed is a key aspect. This includes the application of technological tools, regenerative principles, low-carbon strategies, and other innovative elements.


  • Entries should adhere to the provided template, consisting of five panels per entry (four for the design proposal and one for citations/references).
  • The total file size for all five panels should not exceed 15MB. The format should be in A2 size and in PDF format. If selected as a winner or merit recipient, you will be required to provide high-resolution individual images of your panels. These images should solely contain drawings, rendered images, photographs, and thumbnails.
  • Ensure that the total site area, actual site images, and geographical coordinates are included.
  • Graphic scales should be provided alongside drawings where necessary to aid comprehension.
  • Panels should contain content sufficient to clearly convey the proposal and align with the stated evaluation criteria.
  • It’s crucial that no identifying details, such as team member names or practices, appear anywhere on the panels.
  • Submissions must be in English; entries in other languages will be disqualified.
