Written by Applications are now open for the African Youth Expert Development for Climate Action (AYEDE) Fellowship, a 12-week virtual capacity development programme designed to equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and practical skills needed to lead climate action, policy development and green economy initiatives across Africa.
The fellowship is implemented by Sustainable Participatory Development and Climate Resilience Initiative, a youth-led organisation focused on strengthening participatory climate governance, sustainable development and community-driven resilience across the continent.
The AYEDE Climate Action Fellowship brings together young Nigerians interested in climate policy, innovation and sustainable development. Through structured learning sessions, expert mentorship and collaborative projects, the programme aims to prepare a new generation of African climate leaders capable of addressing the continent’s growing environmental challenges.
Why This Matters
Africa faces increasing climate challenges that affect agriculture, energy systems, water resources and livelihoods. At the same time, the continent has a rapidly growing youth population that can play a critical role in shaping sustainable solutions.
The AYEDE Fellowship aims to strengthen youth participation in climate governance, climate finance, renewable energy transitions and community-based resilience initiatives. By equipping young people with interdisciplinary skills and policy knowledge, the programme supports African-led climate solutions and strengthens the continent’s emerging green economy workforce.
The name AYEDE also carries cultural significance. In the Yoruba language, “Ayẹde” means “Life has come,” reflecting the programme’s commitment to protecting lives, restoring hope and promoting climate solutions led by African communities.
Who Should Apply
- The fellowship is open to young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35 who have demonstrated interest or involvement in climate action or development-related activities.
- Applicants should have at least one year of engagement in climate or development work through volunteering, research, academic projects or community initiatives.
- Participants must also demonstrate a clear commitment to climate action and be willing to dedicate approximately five hours per week to the programme.
- Applicants must have reliable internet access and a strong interest in applying what they learn to real-world climate solutions.
- At least 50 percent of selected fellows will be women, and applications from underserved communities are strongly encouraged.

Programme Timeline
Applications are currently open. The application deadline is in March, with selected fellows notified in late March. An orientation session will take place in early April, and the fellowship programme will begin in April.
The programme will conclude in June with a final project showcase and graduation ceremony.
