The Care Wave Foundation has launched a scholarship programme to expand access to tertiary education for Nigerian students facing financial barriers, alongside plans to introduce a mentorship programme focused on education, career development and personal growth.

The Abuja-based foundation said the initiative is part of its broader work in education, healthcare, economic empowerment and social support, with a focus on underserved young people and vulnerable communities.

The foundation operates as a Pan-African initiative and said its programmes are guided by the belief that many people have the potential to succeed but lack access to the opportunities and support needed to realise it.

Under the scholarship programme, eligible students will receive financial support for their tertiary education, with assistance covering tuition and other education-related costs. Care Wave’s official scholarship information says the programme is merit- and need-based, with priority given to students from vulnerable communities who have secured admission into eligible federal universities in Nigeria.

The scholarship initially covers one academic year, with students expected to maintain the required academic standard and meet other programme conditions to qualify for renewal in subsequent academic sessions.

The foundation’s scholarship application process involves eligibility screening, submission of academic and personal documents and review by a scholarship committee. Shortlisted applicants may also be invited for interviews before final selections are made.

Care Wave said the support is intended to reduce the financial pressure associated with tertiary education, including tuition, learning materials, accommodation and other costs that can prevent students from continuing their studies.

The foundation’s official scholarship guidelines also require applicants to demonstrate academic performance and genuine financial need, while considering factors such as vulnerability, leadership potential and commitment to education.

Beyond financial support, Care Wave is preparing a companion mentorship programme designed to connect young people with professionals and volunteers who can provide guidance on education, career development and personal growth.

The foundation said mentorship would help beneficiaries make better use of the opportunities created through the scholarship by giving them access to knowledge, experience and professional guidance.

“A scholarship can open a door. Mentorship can help a young person understand what to do after walking through it,” the foundation said.

The mentorship component is expected to broaden the programme beyond education financing by supporting the development of skills, networks and career awareness among young people.

Care Wave’s broader programmes also cover healthcare access, elder care, economic support, social support, and food and water security. Its economic empowerment initiatives are focused on strengthening financial resilience through practical skills and income-generating opportunities.

The foundation said its education support is intended to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent students from pursuing their academic potential.

The initiative also reflects the wider economic value of investing in human capital, as improved access to tertiary education and career mentorship can help young Nigerians build the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the workforce, develop businesses and contribute to their communities.

Care Wave is calling on individuals, educators, professionals, organisations, businesses, donors and volunteers to partner with the foundation in expanding access to educational and economic opportunities for young Nigerians.

The foundation’s scholarship application information states that applicants must complete the process through its official platform and submit the required documents before the applicable deadline.

Through the scholarship and planned mentorship programme, Care Wave said it aims to combine financial assistance with longer-term guidance to help young people progress through education and prepare for professional and economic opportunities.
